Eggs/Larval StageThe eggs and larvae move from the open ocean with the current. This is beneficial because the mainland keeps them safe and allows them to grow.
Post-Larval StageThe grouper settle in mangrove litters and roots. This is advantageous because it protects them from predators and provides them with food.
Juvenile StageThe juveniles continue to hide and feed while living in shallow waters in between mangrove roots. The older juveniles migrate to coral reefs and feed on bigger fish. This environment allows them to still be protected by the coral reefs.

The adults live on reefs for 40 or more years then migrate out into a water column. This gives them plenty of time to mate and spawn and the cycle resets.
